Description

In nature, iodine is found in many rocks, in the soil and in the sea water; it is a vital element for vegetables and animals. It is interesting to note that sea water contains 0.025mg to 0.05 mg of iodine per litre. It is interesting to note that iodine vapours cause irritation to the mucous membranes leading to conjunctivitis and inflammation of the respiratory system.

Appearance

Bright brown-black flakes. Iodine metal occurs as gray-purple granules.

Solubility

Iodine is not very soluble in water, but soluble in alkaline iodide solutions.

Uses

Iodine is used in medicines to treat thyroid disorders, it is also udes as an parasiticide.
