Description

Ammonia is a compound of hydrogen and nitrogen and is characterized by a very strong smell. Ammonia is involved in the nutritional needs of organisms and serves as a precursor to fertilizers and food. Ammonia is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals and is used in many commercial cleaning products. Although common in nature and in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous in its concentrated form.

Solubility

Azanium hydroxide is miscible with water and in an aqueous solution can be expelled by boiling.

Uses

Ammonia solution is used as a general purpose cleaner for many surfaces. In addition aqueous solution of ammonium hydroxide ranging from 16% to 25% are used in the fermentation industry as a source of nitrogen for microorganisms and to adjust pH during fermentation.
