Description

Zinc oxide has the appearance of a white powder and is odourless; if heated, it turns yellow and returns to its natural colour on cooling. Zinc oxide is not soluble in water and ethyl alcohol, while it is soluble in acetic acid and ammonia; it is used in the preparation of cement, in the rubber industry and especially in medicine as an antiseptic for preparing ointments, powders and band-aids.

Appearance

Zinc oxide is a white powder which upon heating becomes yellow.

Solubility

Zinc oxide is soluble in ammonia and in acetic acid but insoluble in water and ethyl alcohol.

Uses

Zinc oxide is used in the rubber industry, in dentistry and as an anti-septic for the preparation of ointments or powders. Zinc oxide is also used as a raw material for production of ceramic pigments and frits and for the agricultural sector .

Classification

Prolonged exposure with zinc oxide may cause irritation to skin with signs of allergic dermatitis. Zinc oxide causes moderate irritation to the eyes on prolonged contact with reversible conjunctiva
