Description

Lactic acid is a colourless to yellowish syrupy liquid which has a tendency to absorb water. Lactic acid is also known as 2 - hydroxypropanoic acid. In nature it is found in milk acid, butter, gastric juices and the brain. It is obtained by lactic fermentation but can also be obtained synthetically.

Appearance

Lactic acid is present as a yellowish clear syrupy liquid.

Solubility

Lactic acid is miscible with water, alcohol and ether but is not soluble in chloroform and petroleum ether.

Uses

Lactic acid is used in the tanning industry and in the food industry to acidulate fruit juices, beer, preserves. Lactic acid is used in the synthetic resin industry to synthezise polyester resins and is also used in the pharmaceutical industry.
