Description

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), also known as butylhydroxytoluene, is a lipophilic organic compound, chemically a derivative of phenol, that is useful for its antioxidant properties. European and U.S. regulations allow small percentages to be used as a food additive. It is widely used in industry wherever oxidation in fluids (e.g. fuel, oil) and other materials must be treated, and free radicals must be kept in check.

Appearance

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a white crystall.

Solubility

BHT is insoluble in water but more soluble in methanol, ethyl alcohol, in benzene, toluene, oils and greases.

Uses

Butylated hydroxytoluene is mainly used as a food additive that exploits its antioxidant properties, known as BHT Food Grade and BHT Feed Grade. BHT is widely used as an antioxidant for industrial use, called BHT Technical Grade, for plastics, elastomers and waxes, oil for electric transformers, hydraulic fluids; it is also used as a fuel additive with the name AO-29. Butylated hydroxytoluene is also used to prevent the formation of peroxide in diethyl ether and other laboratory chemicals. Some additives contain BHT as their main ingredient, while others contain the chemical merely as part of their formulation.
